Why have more people not heard of Seymour Fogel?

Unlike many of the well known Abstract Expressionist painters, Seymour Fogel spent much of his time during the 1950s outside of New York City - the center of the young American, post war artist movement. During his early career, Seymour Fogel preferred to paint, experiment, and "push the envelope" rather than to heavily socialize and discuss painting (Fogel was a "Doer" rather than a "Talker"). In his later career, Fogel continued to prefer that his art "speak for itself." As a world class artist formally trained and mentored through work with Diego Rivera, Philip Guston, and other prominent painters, Fogel's work today only requires a retrospective within the world’s leading abstract and contemporary museums where he originally exhibited complemented with the support, unselfish dedication, and leadership of those appreciating Fogel's work.

Who is representing Fogel's work today?

Since his passing in 1984, Seymour Fogel's work has no longer been represented by The Graham Gallery in New York City. Today, Seymour Fogel's estate is managed by his daughter and granddaughter. As stated by several contributors to this website, Jared, Cy's son, has done a masterful job speaking about his father (we have been told the stories are fascinating and intriguing). If you would like to contact Cy's daughter, son, or granddaughter, please email modernabstractart@gmail.com

Is purchasing work by Seymour Fogel a good investment?

Yes, it is. Seymour Fogel's work, in terms of its inherent quality, innovation, and financial value, continue to be underestimated predominately due to the lack of visibility created by his agents. When sharing Fogel's work with leading galleries and dealers, knowledgeable collectors, and professional art appraisers, the results are unanimous: Fogel’s work is first quality - comparable to that of: Adolph Gottlieb, Ad Reinhardt, Milton Avery, Philip Guston, Robert Motherwell, Williem de Kooning and others.

What is the price of Seymour Fogel's work?

Today, the price for Fogel's paintings and sculptures range from tens of thousands of dollars and up.

Where can I get my painting by Seymour Fogel appraised?

There are several prominent art appraisers located in regions where Fogel lived (particularly New York City, Houston, and Dallas) and that are familiar with his work; these individuals deliver stellar work. If you would like a list, please email modernabstractart@gmail.com.

Where can I buy a painting by Seymour Fogel?

Seymour Fogel’s work can be purchased from dealers and periodically through leading art auction houses including: Bonhams & Butterfields, David Dike, Heritage, Rago Arts, Skinner, and William Doyle.

What should I look for when thinking about purchasing?

You want to ensure you're purchasing an authentic painting, and you're paying a proper price. Importantly, you need to investigate the art dealer or estate to ensure they are reputable, have clear title, and are not in any sort of financial distress (i.e., they have paid their income and property taxes on time--with no penalty--and that they personally have a strong credit score--in excess of 750). Without all of these items, you are encouraged to pass.

I noticed many of Seymour Fogel's paintings appear not to have sold at recent auctions, why is that?

Items that do not sell at auction simply means there was not a sufficient number of interested parties for the pieces during the day of the auction. Auctions are based upon competitive bidding, and an individual buyer is unable to singlehandedly increase the price beyond any reserve (or minimum price the seller will accept for the painting). Fortunately, this represents a tremendous opportunity to include Seymour Fogel’s work to your collection.

How do I sell a painting by Seymour Fogel?

If you are interested in selling a painting or sculpture by Seymour Fogel, you may wish to contact one of the auction houses listed above. You may also consider listing the piece for sale within the classifieds of Art.net or Ask Art. Of course, feel free to forward an electronic image and description of the work to jjohnson@artofseymourfogel.com and we will post it on this site.
